21 Jump Street

The choice of this movie sees my better half’s nostalgic like of all things 80s, whether they be TV series, film, music or even toys. Hence without warning this DVD arrived in our post box over the weekend courtesy of the folks over at Lovefilm.

’21 jump street’ is a remake of a late 80’s popular TV series in the US. During its 1987-1991 lifespan, the original cast included the likes of Johnny Depp, who at the time was just starting out in the industry. Some think that he may be one of the most famous stars who shot to stardom from late 80’s television. In case you are a fan, yes, Mr.Depp does actually appear in this film for about 60 seconds.

The new big screen version of this action-comedy stars Channing Tatum and a slimline Jonah Hill as Jenko and Schmidt.

The duo met in high school as you can see from this image just like many other duos in Hollywood film!

To start with I had rather low expectations of whether or not I would enjoy the film and thus only put this on as background noise whilst I was doing my evening crochet, not to mention to try and whittle down our ever-so-long ‘to rent list’ on the Lovefilm online ordering system.

Surprisingly, I found myself getting into the movie from half way right through to the end. The undeniable 'bromance' developed between the duo through the ridiculousness of the setup from a basic concept storyline with hilarious buddy conversations.

I would say this film belongs to the teen genre. There are some unnecessary ‘action’ packed sequences, coupled with it some outrageous scenes making it a worthwhile comedy.

It contains some vulgarities as you could imagine, something reminiscent of scenes from another popular TV series turned into big screen ‘the inbetweeners’.

Not sure about 'the best comedy of the year' tag given by magazine, THE WEEK. So far this year I haven't seen anything funnier than '21 Jump street' yet, so I must give it a thumbs up and recommand the film.

It is perfect for a gloomy autumn evening if you want to have a silly laugh and you don't want to pay too much of the attention to the storyline. That is, until you get soaked into the comedy and start to watch it for real.
